WASHINGTON, DC (Oct. 25th, 2023) – Teach For America (TFA) DC Region has a bold goal: By 2030, twice as many children in Wards 7 & 8 will be proficient in reading assessments as compared to the spring of 2019. CityTutor DC is excited to partner with TFA to support this goal in Washington, DC. TFA has provided both in-person and virtual tutoring.
TFA DC Region’s Executive Director, Ryan Tauriainen, stated that, “We hope to accomplish three things through the Ignite Fellowship. First, we will measure academic progress across 3rd grade literacy, 8th grade math outcomes, which are the two areas most predictive of college enrollment and graduation. Second, we want to see growth in student engagement in school. Third, we want to influence Ignite Fellows to become teachers.” Through their Ignite Fellowship, thirty TFA fellows will provide virtual high-impact tutoring to students at DC Scholars PCS and Two Rivers PCS during school year 2023-24.
TFA and CTDC’s partnership began with service in Summer 2023. Forty TFA Fellows tutored 120 students in literacy at Rocketship RISE and Rocketship Legacy. TFA tutors focused on building strong relationships, one of the most important characteristics of impactful tutoring, to generate enthusiasm around student learning. One TFA tutor noted, “Tutoring was a great place to build relationships with my students. I was glad that I was able to work on parts of the learning that might have been missed during the main lesson session.”
