The Fishing School will launch one of the first CityTutor Hubs, providing high-impact early literacy tutoring to students at C.W. Harris Elementary School and Drew Elementary School in Ward 7. The Fishing School works with cohorts of young people across multiple years to build their capacity to succeed in school and life.
Leo Givs, Executive Director of The Fishing School, said this partnership with CityTutor DC would allow The Fishing School to develop stronger relationships with students in need of hands-on, intensive literacy interventions and help get them back on track.
“This past year was very difficult for our students, particularly students of color, who ended the school year with six months of unfinished learning,” Givs said. “Our CityTutor Hub will deepen our impact in the schools we serve, which are predominantly African-American and operate in our city’s more underserved communities.”
About The Fishing School
The Fishing School believes that children succeed in school when they receive high-quality supports in math and reading, develop sound life skills, and have engaged parents. The Fishing School’s (TFS) afterschool and summer camp program provides enrichment activities designed to improve students’ academic performance and build critical social and emotional skills. Each year, they serve more than 400 students from Title-I-eligible schools across DC with continuous, out-of-school-time programming.
