Math Corps will support math in middle schools from January 2022-December 2022. Students in grades 4-8 will master foundational skills in working with numbers (whole and rational) and their operations (adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing), with a focus on algebra. Students receiving Math Corps tutoring will build a strong conceptual understanding by working with manipulatives and pictorial representations. They also build computational proficiency through mastery of common algorithms used to execute addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division operations. Finally, they get extensive practice in applying these skills to solve problems. Throughout tutoring, assessment data are collected to help ensure students are learning as effectively as possible and are ultimately on track for algebra readiness. Math Corps has demonstrated that it helps improve student math skills. Results from the latest school year showed students served by Math Corps exceeded their expected growth—there was a difference of 22 scaled growth score points for students assigned to Math Corps compared to students in a control group. Students in the control group would not reach this growth point until three months later.
